Dog Days of Summer returns for First Fridays in downtown Adrian

May 01, 2024

ADRIAN — One of Adrian’s best-attended editions of First Fridays is its annual “Dog Days of Summer,” event, which happens this evening throughout downtown Adrian.

The Wagley Group is partnering again with the city of Adrian to make today’s “Dog Days” program a real treat. The Lenawee Humane Society is another contributing sponsor of the event.

Dog Days activities get started at 5 p.m. with registration until 5:45 p.m. for the pet parade. There is no fee to enter a dog into the parade through downtown Adrian. The registration tent will be in the Winter Street parking lot behind The Wagley Group office. To enter the parade, all dog owners need to do is fill out a card with their name and their dog’s name so both can be announced during the parade.

Goody bags will be handed out to the first 100 dogs during the registration period.

"Pawsports," which are $5 to play, and a pooch pass, which is $10 per dog and allows pets to participate in as many pet contests as they would like, are some of the other games and incentives.

Raffle tickets and T-shirts will also be handed out, a news release from the city of Adrian said. A guessing contest at the parade registration tent will award a lucky winner a Pet Supplies Plus gift card.

A surprise event at the four corners of downtown Adrian is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and the annual group picture of dog owners and their dogs is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. at the registration area.

The pet parade goes from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and will start behind the Wagley Group office.

From 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., several doggie contests will be staged in the Jean Christopher lot, including a costume contest that will award prizes to the dog with the most original, the best homemade, the cutest and the funniest costumes; a fastest sitter contest; and a pie-eating contest, which will award prizes for small dogs, medium dogs and large dogs.

To prepare for today’s itinerary, a number of downtown streets will be closed to traffic starting at 2:30 p.m. They are expected to reopen at 11 p.m., the city said.

Maumee Street, from North Broad to North Winter streets; Main Street, from East Church to East Front streets; and the half blocks of Washburn and Toledo streets will be closed off to motorists.

Other First Fridays features include the Adrian Cruise-In car show, sponsored by Nova’s Soda Pop and Candy Shop, and live entertainment from The Metros Band, Bad Mojo, Aubrey Musolf, DJ STE, karaoke at the Adrian American Veterans (AMVETS), and free music and pool at Club 109.
